Cees,

During research into RAF Lichfield & Hawker Typhoons I was contacted by a gentleman who grew up around here. While telling me about Lichfield he mentioned that he worked as a builder and they were demolishing a small building at the Castle Bromwich site. The building had a basement and, so he tells me, a crated merlin complete with delivery note still attached was sitting down there. This was removed before any other information became available and at the time he was not interested in knowing anything else about it.....therefore he did not ask any questions. How true this is I am not sure but having been bought up 10 miles from the site coupled with my father flying from this site for some time the 'rumours' and stories of 'finds' have refused to go away. Is there ever this much smoke without a fire?

: Hi all,
:
: We probably all know the rumours about a cache of crated S
: pitfires, Merlin/Griffon engines and a quantity of tools s
: upposedly buried somwhere in the grounds of Castle Bromwic
: h.
:
: Over the years these rumours have surfaced, discussed on a
: nd they died down to resurface again later etc.etc.
:
: I would like to know if we here at WIX can prove this rumo
: ur to be a fact or bury it once and for all.
:
: Question: Has there actually been a attempt to look for th
: ese treasure troves? And if so what has been found.
:
: If not, dare I say to dismiss this rumour to be based on f
: olklore and bury it once and for all, never to be talked a
: bout.
:
: What are your views?
