5) Lightning Underwater at Torrey Pines and Silent Hunter at the Silver Strand:
Should We Incorporate these Unique Cultural Resources into the State Parks System?

Newly developed blue-green laser imaging revealed a ditched P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft lost offshore from Torrey Pines State Park. This rare WWII historic resource has become a rich marine life habitat for rarely seen wolf-eels and other ocean fauna. Near Silver Strand State Beach, side scan sonar imagery acquired during a shallow subtidal cultural resources survey proved to represent a sunken U.S. submarine built after WW I. This paper discusses the desireability and potential for acquisition of these unusual submerged historic resources which are located near State Parks property. Preliminary underwater survey mapping and photo documentation results are presented.
