I don't know how much you know about the Air Britain books, but......
The J1000 onwards serials listings are of very abbreviated format, as you've probably seen - I'm not knocking them: in fact, I'm soooo thankful to Jim Halley for seeing this major, major project through. AB also publishes a series of 'Type' files where each volume is dedicated to a single aircraft type - Lanc, Halifax, Oxford, Anson, Defiant, etc, etc. For the very large production types, the units info is identical with the serials volumes. For the smaller production types, the units info is more detailed. In addition to the serials lists, each vol contains much additional info on its type. They have also published a small number of the serials vols in more expanded form (K1000-K9999 is one that comes to mind).
