The Air Historical Branch (RAF) is a small in-house historical research team in the Ministry of Defence. It supports the work of Ministers, MoD secretariats, the Air Staff and Air Headquarters as well as responding to the general public. "
A vacancy will arise shortly in the branch for a Curatorial Officer Grade F. You will undertake research from primary and secondary sources on a wide range of topics, but relating primarily to Royal Air Force history since 1945, including enquiries which arise from Parliament. You will
be expected to work unsupervised and to provide answers quickly and accurately as well as carry out more complex research tasks in support of the branch historians. You will also be required to liaise with outside agencies on air historical matters.
QUALIFICATIONS: You should normally hold a degree in Modern History or an equivalent qualification in an appropriate subject, or have specified relevant skills. You must have a sound knowledge of Royal Air Force roles and history, together with a demonstrable interest and knowledge of air operations and the Defence organisation. The ability to work in a team, good oral and written communication, planning and organisational skills, accuracy and attention to detail plus proficiency ~: in the use of Microsoft Word are also essential requirements.
Evidence of original research and publication would also be an advantage.
SALARY: The salary will be in the range of ?14,742 - ?23,877. The post also attracts a Recruitment and Retention allowance of ?1,040 and Outer London Weighting of ?1,150. Starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
BENEFITS: These include a non-contributory pension scheme (except contributions to a widow(ers) pension of 1.5% of salary). Five weeks annual leave rising to six after 10 years' service, plus public holidays.
NATIONAITY: This is a Non-Reserved post which is open to UK, British Commonwealth, Irish and European Economic Areas Nationals. You should normally have been resident in the UK for at least the last five years.
