Somehow I doubt they feel they are destroying anything. I'm sure they feel that they are providing a service to the community through construction of something useful on otherwise nonproductive land. They are in the business of construction, not destruction. You should be thankful that they are memorializing the site by using names that will keep the memory of what was once there alive. There is nothing to require them to do this! 50 years from now, some child will undoubtedly ask, "Why is this street called Spitfire Lane?"
Maybe instead of directing your comments toward the developers (after the fact), you should have lobbied with the local officials (and the local community) to keep this land as it was, or perhaps you could have purchased the land yourself to put it to the use that you see as being most fit.
Developers are not necessarily aviation enthusiasts, nor charitable concerns, they are businesses that provide a service to fulfill a demand within the community. Without this progress, we would all be living in grass shacks or in caves like the Taliban.
Besides, some of my best friends (and many well known warbird collectors) are developers!
