...with my old boss at B-Dale, Buck Rigg, director of the 8th AF Museum.
There was a lightning storm last night - probably the cause. The fire started on the roof, and the roof is /gone/. Luckily the original base buildings were concrete and tile - designed to be fireproof and earthquake proof. Other than the roof, damage to papers and documents, there was no signigicant structural damage. Water damage from the fire trucks probably did more damage than the fire itself.
The historian's office, as I alluded in a post below, contained original artifacts. The original Eaker trophies are there from Bolling field. Many other trophies and Bomb Comp things there too. The ORIGINAL HQ 8AF histories and 8AF Group histories from WWII are there as well. Yes, copies are at Maxwell, but the original onion skins are there at B-Dale on the 2nd floor. Far as we know, not harmed by the fire.
That's a quick summary, but good news is, not as bad as we thought.
