Rewriting History
The hundreds of TV channels currently available even to the most basic satellite system has resulted in constant repetition of sequences on the 'History' channels. This is frustrating since it should have become blindingly obvious to whoever supplied the clips that they are totally confused. Thanks to TV, everyone now knows that USS Arizona was sunk at Pearl
Harbor by three Dauntlesses releasing
their bombs in a shallow dive. That happened just before the Avenger launched its torpedo. The Bismarck is another well-worn subject. Invariably, it is attacked by Ospreys, Blackburn Darts, Ripons, RAF Vildebeests and even a Spanish Hispano-engined Vildebeest on floats. A Swordfish might just get into the sequence. The Battle of Britain has another strip. In it, a Spitfire comes in behind the camera aircraft and is repelled by a German gunner in immaculate white flying suit standing up in the dorsal position of a Do 23. A four-cannon
Hurricane fires and knocks bits off a Spitfire. Three Morane 406s fire their
guns in formation (i.e. someone has scratched the negative in front of the wings) and usually a FW 190 is dispatched over the snowy mountains of Kent. Perhaps the script writer should
talk to the film strip editor - or possibly,
both watch the initial cut before printing the finished product. Discuss.
