Air racing has always been a hotbed of controversy between the purists and the "go fast" group. Waayyy back in 1985 I was poking around Chino airport and stumbled upon Dago Red in one of the old Aero Sport hangars. She was pretty charred from the 1984 inflight fire but looking like the most beautiful incarnation of a Mustang I have ever seen. The argument that air racing has perpetuated both airframe and engine technology has been made and well founded. That day at Chino was an eyeopening for me. At Planes of Fame was the Super Corsair, the Sanders hangar was harboring Dreadnaught, these were gorgeous aircraft that were taken care of better then most any others I had ever seen. On subsequent trips Tsunami and the Pond Racer were on show as were many others. Whats my point? These aircraft are extensions of 60 year old technology that has yet to have any competition. They also fill mans need to go fast...which is as old as powered flight itself. I say race them...when all is said and done they will make great additions to the NASM!!! in company with the Hughes H-1, Wittmans Buster, Winnie Mae, Excallibur, Doolittle's Schneider racer, and the rest!
