Hi Tony.
No worries, it was a pleasure to do it, I always enjoy digging up the history of 8th AF Mustangs.
Yes, the Komet was destroyed by the two pilots named, but the only problem is discovering which P51 Erfkamp was actually flying at the time, my book doesn't go into such detail sadly. I have no access to ORB's, Log Books or anything like that, mores the pity, but I bet someone could find out for you.
You sell yourself short with the remains of your Mustang Tony, in the right hands it could be complete and flying by the end of next week.
After all, as a famous Florida parts dealer is on record as having said to the authorities........."All it takes is an original bolt or screw to rebuild a P51 indentity" !!!!!!
Presumably he doesn't even need the data-plate to do it, makes you wonder just how many warbirds are running around with nothing more than a bolt, screw or rivet from the genuine article, and the owner/rebuilder claims the complete aircraft was found in a barn in Shangri-La covered in layers of chicken crap..........so yours would be a "right nice restoration" having the data-plate no less, and a rudder pedal!
TaTa
Mick, planning on competing for England and winning the gold in the 2003 International Cynical Games to be held in Atlantis, or Shangri-La if the weather's bad........anyone having an aversion to copious quantities of wool being pulled over their eyes is welcome to attend.
