This is about the same discussion about which was the first: the chicken or the egg. The discussion will never be closed.

By the way, did you know that Halifax crew flying the later Hercules powered types enjoyed themselves in feathering an inboard engine and overtaking struggling Lancasters.......

This is just to make a statement that you cannot compare the different types, it is just a matter of taste. Unfortunately the general opinion is that the British used the Lanc and Spit to defeat the Germans, while the Americans had Mustangs and B-17's against the Messerschmitts. All other aircraft types were only used for training. Things never change.
