In the mid 70's a bunch of us heard that there was the remains of an American WW2 fighter aircraft. The aircraft concerned was either a P51 - Mustang or a P40 - Kittyhawk. The wreck was on a cockies property down towards Mt Elliott and our intrepid investigator Bob (Iron Lung) Lyons said we must find it.

Well being young and dumb and full of cum we set of on our adventure. It was said that all we had to do was drive to the farmers property travel a short distance across the farm and presto we are there. Well on the day concerned the gent in question said, by all means you can cross my property but not by car. Well we hoofed. Through swamps, creeks, cow infested paddocks your name until lo and behold there was the object off into the distance glinting in the noon day sun. Well with heightened expectation we strode toward the object. Out across the dried mud flat we loped to this part of history. There it was in all its glory, the BLOODY remains of a weather balloon. After a series of inventive expletives profoundly stated by all we proceeded on our quest. Finally we found the remains. Fascinated we were but a touch disappointed by what was left. Nature had taken it' toll as well as the hundreds of other first time discovers like ourselves.

The ironic part about it was that the RAAF got to hear about it and so the story goes flew a helicopter to retrieve the prop sticking up in the mud. I dare say it is adorning some flyboys clubhouse today.

and the feelers are out on the other bits Rob..... :0)
