I have been thinking back to the episodes of the TV series called LoveJoy in the UK circa late 1980s!
They used the term PROVENANCE then in respect to the documented authenticiaty of an antique...
From Dictionary.com:
prov?e?nance Pronunciation Key (prv-nns, -n?ns)
n.
Place of origin; derivation.
Proof of authenticity or of past ownership. Used of art works and antiques.
[French, from provenant, present participle of provenir, to originate, from Old French, from Latin prvenre : pr-, forth; see pro-1 + venre, to come; see gw- in Indo-European Roots.]
Sample of use:
In a world awash in information of dubious provenance, whom can you trust to tell you the truth?
--Gerald Jonas, review of The Jazz, by Melissa Scott, New York Times, June 18, 2000
The provenance of his possessions traced back to dukes and duchesses, kings, queens, czars, emperors, and dictators.
--John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
