I wonder the same thing.
A Do 17 M-1 have a normal tactical range of 500km (311miles), and a maximum range of 1360km (845 miles). While a Do 17Z-2 have a normal tactical range of 330km (205 miles), and a maximum range of 1160km (721 miles).
The Heinkel 111H-3 have a have a maximum range of 1500 km (721 miles) while later models had increased range. (A He 111 of to me unknown variant was used to sink The ship Thistlegorm)
The range quoted is from the book German Aircraft of the Second WWII by Smith et al.
So from where did the Do 17 start, Crete? And it must have flown more or less on the verge (as a recce?) of it's maximum range, probably without offensive cargo?

Who didn't get to dive on the Thistlegorm because of lousy weather... ;-(
