having driven and fixed tanks the answer proberly is the drivers hatch is always the smallest being at the front of the vehicle don't want to make too big spoils all that armour plating. Also you have a bloody great barrel just above your head when you get out it's not unknown for some one to strick it on the way out. Also the best way to describe the inside of a fighting vehicle is an assault course, all sorts of things to trip up on as well as loads of objects to break loose. Suprised so many of the crew got out. As to recovery my old centruion recovery tank would pull that out no problem, fitted with a 100 ton straight pull which, just put a snatch block on stick the land anchor down put the whinch in low gear and put the kettle on couple hours later it would be sitting on the bank
