Countywide GA Ban Proposed
West Sussex GA Threat
Airfields.org wants us all to know what trouble awaits the unwary, or the lazy. Here's what they've sent us:
The development of GA is under threat in West Sussex - and pilots and aviation supporters are being urged to fight to save the future development of flying in the county.
Although the county council's Draft Structure Plan appears to support both Goodwood Airfield and Shoreham Airport, it states that "elsewhere, proposals for new or extended general aviation facilities should not be permitted."
Another paragraph in the accompanying text advises that "proposals to increase general aviation activity should be resisted particularly if they would have an adverse impact upon the environment."
This means that if the plan is passed in its current form, it's likely that it would be impossible for any owner or operator even to contemplate establishing the smallest of airstrips in the county.
Those concerned about the future of GA should therefore submit representations to the county council as a matter of urgency. These should be made on a form obtainable from The County Planning Officer (ref: splan), West Sussex County Council, County Hall, Chichester, PO19 1RH, or on the West Sussex Structure Plan website www.westsussex.gov.uk/PL/splan/default.htm.
Responses should be reasoned, calm and polite. They should relate to draft policy NE18 on General Aviation, supporting the position in relation to Goodwood and Shoreham and objecting to the position on other aerodrome or airfield facilities.
The deadline for representations is February 15, 2002, so get writing!
