In reply top So it isn't a P40D after all. posted by Mick on Mon Jan 21, 2002 06:17:32 PM
AK940 is actually one of 560 Kittyhawk MkI's (Hawk 87A-1), not a MkIA (Hawk 87A-4)as I said before, but it still isn't a P40D.
Strictly there were only 22 P40D's (Hawk 87A-1)built for the AAF, and the first 20 equivalent MkI's for the RAF all with four .50's.
RAF serials were :- AK571-AK999, AL100-AL230.
Six .50's were then installed and the AAF P40's then became P40E (Hawk 87A-3), but the remaining 540 RAF examples stayed as MkI until the 1,500 Lend-Lease P40E-1's (Hawk 87A-4)went into production, when they became MkIA.
RAF MkIA serials were:- ET100-ET999, EV100-EV699.
I hope this makes some sense to someone, it's what I read in several books so it must be right! ;-)
