The continentals rode on the right as well until Napoleon changed it!
Also (you draw a sword across you body) it is easier to shake hands if you are driving on the left. you do have to lean over the horse!
Finally, the Japanese drive on the left as well.. Now if such an efficient country can some up with the same conclusion as the Brits (on there own). Then there must be something in it!
