Serial numbers and paint schemes

No problem.... I was in a hurry and could not find the original serial number.....
Many people tend to keep the original serial number, even if they change the markings of the aircraft. I wonder what people think of this.... Should the serial number go with the markings the aircraft is carrying or the actual aircraft itself???
