Hi Will,
The hole in the radiator was from the crash, not from the water. I wish I had a better picture of the radiator. It was solid copper. The hole was about the size of a dinner plate, and it wasn't all the way through.
What did you look under on ebay to find these parts? I searched all over the site today, and I could not find anything! Could you give me an idea of what the bids were? I probably shouldn't want to know, but if someone is profiting from this I feel I have the right to know. I gather there is a market for these kind of items?
Mr. Wisler was GIVEN these parts under the assumption that they would be sold for a restoration project only! Granted, he did identify the plane, and he is solely responsible for the fly over by Kermit Weeks, but this all still bothers me! I don't want these pieces to go to a "Treasure Hunter"! However, what I want is no longer relevent.
I must reiterate, that we have been given ALL the pieces with identifying marks and stamps on them, and also the rudder pedal, and one tip of a propeller, so this in no way has anything to do with not being given, what most would consider the "valuable" pieces. To me, there should be no money involved. I truly hope whomever does purchase these things does something positive with them, and that this sale does not totally prevent the possibility of a restoration.
To the best of my knowledge, the data plate was never recovered. I feel certain if it had been I would have been told. Actually, I believe it would be in my possession. The wreck has been treated with the utmost respect since its discovery. I can not say enough good things about the way it was handled prior to the donation to Mr. Wisler.
Well, I will climb down off my soapbox now, and simply thank you for your interest in all this.
Best wishes,
Karen
