Hi Karen,
I am coming into this debate with little knowledge of the facts, so please bear with me...
In the UK, there are many museums which display crashed artefacts which have been recovered, cleaned & mounted either into display cases or onto wall mounted display boards, normally these displays are accompanied by photographs of the pilot and / or crew, and any photographs of the aircraft prior to it's demise (if possible) along with a little bit about the history etc...
All in all, this sort of display speaks volumes & is a super way to help support museums.
Alternatively, a similar style of display could be put together and offered to the aircraft / pilot's last unit / home base.
Often a museum will provide a display case for this purpose, but if not, then it is fairly cheap and easy to build a display unit yourself. I know, as we have built a couple for similar purposes.
Finally, if you contact owners of the type of aircraft currently flying and ask them if they would "fly" a certain piece as a tribute etc... If you don't ask, you won't get, and the worst anyone can say is "no".
Do not dispair, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it just takes a while to reach it.
I sincerely hope this little bit helps you and I wish you well for the future.
Ian
