Mick,
Under Lend-Lease the stuff would be allowed back into the US.
At the end of WWII the Brits return hundreds of aircraft including B-25,AT-6,B-17 ect. the Lend-Lease States that the Leasing county either has to return the stuff to the US or destroyed, hence the massive carrier dumps. Besides the PNG items do not fall under Lend-Lease these are USAAF, USMC,and USN aircraft that are being talked about. Most of the RAAF and RAF aircraft were purchased that are in the PNG theater of operations.
Now for the permits they all have the PNG seal of the export on them so how could they have been obtain illegally. Unless the PNG gov. besides the Port of LA was instructed by the US State Department to go through all of these Docs. to make sure they were legal. Customs officers spent many weeks going over all of these items and found nothing wrong so please lets move on everyone.
Cheers Rob
