I'd head for Duxford, I used to do it on 24 hr layovers in LHR easily.
You can catch the train from Victoria Station, Kings Cross etc, its about 1.5 hrs and there is a free shuttle bus from Cambridge.
You can get the train schedules at http://www.rail.co.uk/, I used to buy a cheap day return.
