Jack wanted to get this on film since he often flies his Mustang to the races at those contrail altitudes. Ed Bowlin (the other Mustang pilot in the film) asked Bud Anderson if they often saw contrail during missions in the European theatre; Bud said that he almost never saw contrails as they never flew that high for bomber escort missions. They seldom got up that high that contrail would form. That also explains why bomber contrail pictures are so rare and medium bomber contrail photos are essentially non-existant.
