My quest for warbirds in North Carolina...

Posted by Mike Henniger on Wed Dec 12, 2001 08:04:23 AM

I will be spending some time in North Carolina during the upcoming holidays. I will likely have some time to photograph some warbirds if I can find them. To aid me in my search for airframes I have been doing some research on the web and found a number of museums, however there are some questions I have that I have and have not been able to answer.

Can anyone help me prep for my quest?

Regards,

Mike

Question #1
Is aircraft collection of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayeteville the same collection in the air park at Pope AFB?

Question #2
Can anyone confirm that there is a F-84 on display at the Asheboro Municipal Airport?

Question #3
Is there an F-94 on display in Bessemer? If so where is it in the town?

Question #4
Is there still an F-84 on display at Enka Junior High School in Enka?

Question #5
Is the small air park at Seymour Johnson AFB accessible to the public?

Question #6
Does the Sabre Society of North Carolina in Hickory have a museum building yet?

Question #7
Is there a Grumman F11 on display in New Bern?

Question #8
I have a note that says there is a PBY and a F4U on display at USN MCAS Cherry Point (Marine Base) but I have been unable to confirm this. Does anyone know if this is true and if they are accessable by the public?

Question #9
Does anyone know if there is a H-53 on display at USN MCAS New River?

There are a few musuems/airframe that I have been able to confirm...
-> Carolinas Aviation Museum, Charlotte
-> Confederate Air Force ? Carolinas Wing, Morganton
-> Museum of Life and Science, Durham
-> North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh
-> Western North Carolina Air Museum, Hendersonville
-> there is a F-101 on a pole at the Wilmington air port
