Gun Nosed PBY

I was just reading a fictional story about the Black Cats and the author described a PBY with 4 fifties mounted in the nose under the bow turret. Sounded like a field mod but I had never heard of it before. Now it could have been creative license on the part of the author but I was wondering if such a mod was ever done and do any pictures of it survive.
