It depends on alot of stuff in WWII bomber gunners always got confirm from another crew man or aircraft as for the fighters by mid-43 all USAAF/USN fighters had gun cameras.

As for ground attack if the aircraft was observed to been destroyed IE catch firer or blow up then it was given a ground kill.

Of all the waring nations in WWII the Germans had the toughtest. It is est. the Eric Hartman might have close to 400 a/c shot-down but this could never be proven. If you look at any list of German aces they all state the confirm and then a seperate list of prob.

As for Prob. this was given to an aircraft seen either going down but no impact or an aircraft seen leaving the combat area on firer.
