Many thanks for the steer to the Warbird Alley site.
The reports quoted there came just after the wreckage of WG871 resurfaced in August of last year. That's where I initially picked up on the story.
I'm not sure how the mention of recovery of the aircraft or the pilot's remains got there. As far as the MOD is concerned, the site was fully investigated for remains in March/April 1957. None were ever found. There were no plans to go back to the site and conduct a further search or to recover any wreckage.
I have also recently seen some video footage of the crash site that was taken by a local Malaysian TV crew during August last year. There didn't seem to be a great deal remaining.
