While I enjoy both rare and classic aircraft, what I really go for is variety. If a museum has a good variety of aircraft, that will hold my interest. I think the other key is presentation. If there's a large collection of aircraft, but no information about them, or people to ask, I'm less likely to stay a full day. However, I've been known to spend an entire day at museums with a small handful of aircraft, but full of information and people to answer my questions.
I know of one museum that has a number of veterans on hand - all of whom are more than happy to talk your ears off for an afternoon. And I keep going back because I always learn something new when I visit!
I also know from experience as a volunteer that people will spend more time at a museum that has docents on hand to provide a tour or answer questions than a museum without these features.
