A 1/24 Merlin is included in the 1/24 Airfix Spitfire Mk. I and P-51D kits. It's decent, but would need alot of scratch building and detailing to make it realistic.
Several years ago, some company (I forgot which) advertised a series of pewter or brass models of WWII aero engines. They were mounted on wooden bases with plexiglass covers. They looked like they would be nice desk models. I don't remember the scale and I recall that they were quite expensive. I believed they advertised in FlyPast and the ad I saw pictured a nice DB605.
A company in the US offers plans for the home machinist or home hobbyist for making working scale radials. I was surprised they have plans for double-row 14 cylinder and 18 models in addition to 7 and 9 cylinder models. Then plans are not too expensive and I gather that you would machine the majority of the parts yourself. I'm planning on ordering a set of plans in the future.
