An Internet Browser is used to browse the open sites of the Internet, just as the shelves of the local library and bookshop might be browsed for useful books.

In the same way, using a library in this way is not in any sense lurking, any more than it is on the Web.

Browse: to read or survey desultorily.
Lurk: Linger furtively, hide, esp for sinister purposes

Why this misleading and demeaning term has been adopted for one of the main uses of the Web beggars understanding.

If there is something worth posting or that needs replying to, I post. If not, I keep my trap shut and my powder dry.
