Gun positions of the early Spitfire?

Hi All,
Rather than hijack Paul's post below, while watching the last last 1/2 hour of the Spitfire Ace programme on Channel 4 (enjoyed what I saw but all I could think was lucky, lucky b*st*rds), it was mentioned that the Hurricane was a better gun platform than the Spit.
While I have heard this said on many occasions I have often wondered why the early Browning MG equiped Spitfire had its guns positioned 1 inboard, 2 centrally and 1 outboard, rather than all 4 grouped together, Hurricane style?
I would have thought that having all 4 guns together, would have had more benefits including a bigger punch (as in the grouping of the fired ammo) and possibly quickier to re-arm?
Would grouping all four Brownings require the Spitfire to have a thicker wing and hence destroy the wing aerodynamics?
Any clues?
Thanks, Tony
