Apparently the highest speed achieved by a piston-engined aircraft in level flight during the war years was by the XP-47J. The figure given is 507 mph using war emergency power at an altitude of 34,300 ft.

The speeds of production fighters in combat will always be open to speculation I'm afraid. It would seem the P-47M, Do-335, and Ta-152H were achieving speeds in the 470's.

Figure given for the F2G-1 at altitude was "only" 431 mph (a real slug!).
