but there is always something left, as Peter A said the forgings and other alloys such as steel etc. usually remain. A very substantial airframe as a Lancaster cannot corrode completely away within fifty years (the story in FP was published about a decade ago)into a small layer of correded metal leaving a hole in the shape of a Lancaster fuselage. The soil on top would have caved in very soon after some rain.

Personally I think it was a lame excuse to cover up a dissapointing project.
