Hi Scott--

Good question. (Several WIXers recently had a discussion like this off-board actually; of course all of us suffer from the same condition, vivid imaginations/drab finances!)

At one time I'd have cited the Tuskegee story as the best not-yet-filmed aviation topic; then the HBO cable movie came out. (Anyone know whether that film was a continuation of the never-finished Lucasfilm Tuskegee project called "Red Tails", or an entirely separate venture, BTW?)

What would I make now? Three possibilities at least come to mind:

--a film treatment of the Spencer Dunmore novel "Ace", about a Luftwaffe fighter pilot (sort of "The Blue Max" set one world war later)

--a film adaptation of the remarkable story of the all-female Soviet fighter regiments in the "Great Patriotic War"; I picture the title "Heroines" in Cyrillic-looking lettering, posters styled after those cool Art Decoish labour graphics, new-build Yak-3s and Fw190s all over the place in the film...And the pilots would be waaaay better-looking than those in most war movies...!

--a film surrounding the 1949 Cleveland National Air Races. Cleland's grassroots Corsair team versus the megabuck Cochran/Odom Mustang squad. Of course it would be necessary to dig up and reconstitute F2G #94 from under that runway extension in Ohio...and put together a new-build P-51C "Beguine" racer...Amid the fierce competition and politicking there'd even be room in the plot for a romance--if strictly necessary! :-)

Cheers

Steve
