If it was a 'gull gray' airframe with white undersides it was probably F4U-4 BuNo.97142, which also had a large black number "10" on each side of the cowling.

FG-1A BuNo.13459 was located there as well until around 1981 when it was reposessed by the USMC and transported by barge via San Diego to Quantico. Joe Payton oversaw the completion of its restoration at Quantico before it went on display at their museum. I've never seen photos of the FG-1A while at Mojave so I couldn't tell you if the ""#86" tri-color paint scheme had been applied there, or if it was added later at Quantico. I do know that it was overall glossy sea blue when McDonnell took delivery of it in 1975.
