Pearce himself said that his flight was not controlled [ he ended up in a hedge ]... not too far from my home town in fact.
He may have got off the ground before the Wright brothers , but they are recognized as the first to do a 'controlled' flight in an aircraft.
Still Pearce didn't do a bad job for a farmer with no outside help at all .. go Kiwis ;-)
