The IJsselmeer used to be the Zuyderzee but was closed off in 1932 with the IJsselmeer as a result.
Although there are sluices where water is let in and out of the Waddenzee (salt water) the majority of the IJsselmeer is fresh water because some major rivers (the IJssel for instance) provide fresh water from elsewhere, only the very north of the lake is a mixture of fresh and salt water. The bottom of the lake is mostly clay or mud which is very good for preserving aircraft wrecks. Also because visibility underwater is almost nil, this has kept the wrecks from being recovered or divers robbing them clean. Most wrecks when found have been missing since the very day they took off for some remote target or were on their way back when intercepted.
Last time I checked there weren't any mountains.
