I had an invitation for the Wednesday tests (in which the Eurofighter beat the Ferrari 3-0) and the Thursday event, but I had to pass due to work commitments.
It was a rainy day, and Schumi said he might have done better on a dry runway. Interestingly, the Eurofighter was a two-seater; during the tests the rear seat was also occupied by one of the squadron COs.
There was also a vintage race, Tiger Moth vs Alfa 1750. Many found it more enjoyable, because comparable and low speeds allowed the two to compete on acircuit, with curves and turns etc.
Grosseto was chosen because it is the seat of the 4th Wing, which has as its badge the black prancing horse of Francesco Baracca - the same one presented to young Enzo Ferrari by Baracca's mother in 1923.
The Wing CO is a great enthusiast and owns several WW2 military vehicles (from Jeep to Kettenkrad). The unit has just taken on the conversion of a Swiss Vampire to standard FB.50 configuration and hopes to build up a gate guardian from various hulks recovered from a gunnery range. Also at Grosseto, a friend of his is restoring a T-6, first flight expected early 2004.
End of sermon.
