Dan,
A friend and I visited Mr.Helldiver a few weeks ago to check on the progress he's making...and of course to do some hangar flying. The subject of the remaining SB2C's came up and Mike offered that one branch of the service that did not have an example of the make very desperately wants one. The way I understand it there are only components of four airframes. The AF is getting the A-24 currently being restored to static specs. If a suitable agreement can be made, the "Other" branch of the service will get a static SB2C for Pensacola. The best airframe and serviceable components are being held for restoration to flying status, most likely for himself. The fourth airframe is giving itself up as a donor for the other three. No exact date was mentioned but Mike was aiming for sometime in Feb or Mar. When I saw the airplane I thought that was agressive but I have no idea how fast he works. Judging from my own experience restoring warbirds, I would say a year from now, but I've always worked flying machines, not statics.
Mikes a great guy...cheers to him and his efforts!
