Well, the worst experience is an easy one. I must attribute this primarily to my ex and not the museum, although the museum also takes a hit. Santa Monica Museum of Flying. My first visit there was interesting. I must say, it was a great collection. However, the birthday party with the Barney look-a-like and kids climbing on the planes was disconcerting at best. But the worst part was the fact that my ex threw a temper tantrum because the race planes had been moved to Mojave. We left after 20 minutes! I had to go back years later, on my own, just to experience the collection.
I have 2 in the 'best' category. First, of course, is Planes of Fame in Chino/Valle. I've been hanging around there for almost 10 years, many as a volunteer. You just don't get a better group of staff and volunteers as well as airplanes. The second in the 'best' category is Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, CA. While it's a small musueum, it's well put together, very community oriented, friendly, good location, etc. On my first visit, I was given a behind the scenes, private tour. I go back and visit whenever I'm up that way. Well worth stopping in.
