I have to say one thing in defense of NASM. While I too found the museum on the Mall a disappointment, I thoroughly enjoyed the guided tours at the Garber Facility. Both times I went, the promised "three hour tour" lasted for five. The groups were small (if you went on Sundays in winter, at least!), the docents were entertaining and well-informed, and the jaw-dropping assortment of airplanes was never boring to work through.

While the new facility at Dulles is an infinitely better environment for display and preservation, I'll miss the magic of entering each dark storage hangar, having the guide flip the switch, and seeing what treasure the [weak] lights would reveal. I'm sure it's the closest I'll ever come to that "old barn full of warbirds" experience we all dream of.
