: yes they did do this, the acft is basicly the marine version of the "A" model with a max gross wt of 124K and empty wt of approx 67K, max T.O. torque 16400 lbs and max fuel with the outboard cigar tanks of 37K if you refueled over the wing so you could get the extra 2K in it. A medium wt "A" model assault landing and going from flight idle to full reverse rapidly between 5-7 feet off the ground will touch down and be backing up in 850 feet...been there done that and have the T-shirt.. i was taught how to do it by an old viet nam guy. it is extreamly hard on the airframe as it hits the ground very hard but that is nothing compaired to what you see when you first go into reverse....sky ground sky ground lef and right 20 degrees more sky more ground all in a few seconds and then BANG as it hits the ground.... if a prop fails to retract and go into reverse you will not have to worry as you are already dead as the acft hits sideways and rolls up into a ball... you go into reverse so fast that the engineer won't even be able to identify which prop has hung up and you can't react to save it... needless to say this was not an approved training event nor was the 100 foot low levels at 220knts with a map and nothing else (not easy)but was important enough that the old viet nam guys would teach us so we had something in our bag of tricks and would know what the acft could do for the next one, cause that's what kept them alive.. what do you think brad?, didn't know i want back that far... but what do i know, i only have 8000+ hours in 3 and 4 blade "A"'s thru "H"'s. the 3 blade "A" was the best low level 130 made... it was a real hoot...FAR better than the "B"'s "E"'s and "H"'s.
