Hi Paul,
I wasn`t trying to be dismissive of the topic when I said "that nails that", an unfortunate choice of words perhaps.
I was simply agreeing with Tonys points about percieved history = money.
Maybe you can tell me though, I thought the whole reason why people don`t just go out and "get a new data plate" was to avoid all the legal hassles of building what is essentially a new aeroplane. Hence a lot of the secrecy surrounding certain individuals rebuilds - they don`t want anyone to know that they threw away most of the original parts. The comparison that occurs to me (from the car world - sorry!) is where people build up hot rods from a new chassis/body combination, buy an old log book and say "Look at my lovely 1934 Ford". Everyone knows its a new car but it neatly avoids having to deal with registering a new vehicle, complete with all the complex and expensive safety equipment. I thought the same held true for aircraft?
Who owns the Supermarine trademark or whatever to permit you to make a genuinely new Spitfire? In other words where would your new data plate come from? Is it not just simply easier to find an old one?
Maybe you can shed some light, Thanks, James
