Hi All,
I finally got a reply from the local archives concerning the crash of Sqn/lr Allan Smith's Typhoon on December 31st, 1944.
They didn't have anything about this particular crash but knew about the attack. Anyway, they put me in contact with someone who knows what happened with the wreck.
When Alan Smith's Typhoon got hit he wanted to put it down as soon as possible. Looking down he saw what he thought was a small lake. In reality it wasn't, but a large stretch of land which had been set under water and had been frozen. He put it down and got out. He told the Germans to keep from the wreck because it was dangerous. The Germans reacted by BLOWING UP the wreck!!!!! So nothing more remains at the crashsite apart from the four cannon which were present in a garden nearby but which have dissapeared some two years ago.
Case closed unfortunately.
Cheers
Cees
