YREKA ? The male pilot of an old single-engine military airplane was killed and his passenger seriously wounded when it crashed just before 3 p.m. Tuesday south of Hornbrook, the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department reported.
The plane, a T-28B single-engine aircraft, had taken off from the Siskiyou County Airport north of Montague, but officials were unsure where its two occupants were headed. It was a U.S. Navy trainer plane no longer used by the military, Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said.

"There were about 14 or 15 911 reports that said it was experiencing mechanical problems," Gravenkamp said.

Those calls were followed by ones that the plane had crashed, she said.

Emergency crews found the plane near Black Mountain and Ager roads, just south of Hornbrook, sheriff's officials said.

The pilot, who was not identified pending notification of family, was found dead by medical personnel, Gravenkamp said

The passenger, whose injuries were unknown, was taken to a Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, Ore., the Sheriff's Department said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash and will investigate, Gravenkamp said.
