Kee-Bird was the B-29 in Greenland, correct ? I don't think they attempted to fly her out on her belly, though that may have been more successful. ;). What I can remember is that the aircraft was on it's gear. During taxi the roughness of the terrain caused fuel to spill from an APU in the rear of the aircraft. This fuel ignited , and the ensuing fire destroyed the aircraft. That is what I remember.
I think that getting the aircraft out of Greenland was a must. The way that was attempted left a bit to be desired. But it is hard to say what other method could have been successful, especially one that was not too costly.
It is a shame the aircraft was destroyed. I heard not too long ago a mission to recover the remains of the aircraft was being pondered.
