When I was little and growing up in Australia, my Mum was constantly telling me, "Money doesn't grow on trees". That's why I got into old aeroplanes. Want another one, you just go and pick the nearest ripe one! A little like that story I guess! It's a nice thought, but it must be remembered that much of the traffic servicing New Guinea was along Queensland's east coast, especially from Townsville north to the cape. Certainly, many machines did come to grief usually through weather, fuel exhaustion or more commonly, a combination of both as was the case of the P-39s that became silent en-masse as their ferry pilots became lost in weather and fuel eventually ran out. All of these incidents are well recorded, along with the fates of most of the aircraft.
To answer the question, I think the urban legend category is appropriate in this case. Cheers for now, Graham.
P.S. Where have I been? It was my turn for a catastrophic P/C failure, the result of a 'nasty' beamed in from afar. Paid silly money for one of those pimply wizards to come and take the machine away, perform magic and bring it back. They're unusual people, and they look and act the same all over the world. S p o o k y ....!
