Interesting. (Strange title for the film, though: wasn't there already a film called "The Aviator", about a mailplane pilot in the twenties? Tom Selleck in the title role iirc?)
D.VIIs (real ones) are indeed rare, and the type did have its own clause in the treaty that formalised the end of World War I...but not all the D.VIIs Tony Fokker didn't spirit away met such an undignified end as being "bonfired". For instance, the early equipment of 1 Squadron of the short-lived Canadian Air Force (pre-RCAF) consisted partially of warprize D.VIIs. Striking sight, totally-stock lozenge-camo Fokkers with Balkankreuz insignia, ornamented with 1 Sqn's black maple leaf on the side. Would love to see one of the number of replica D.VIIs in those markings...
