The C-46 registry is great news! I am trying to identify the serial and/or construction number of two aircraft:
1. On July 10, 1958, a Curtiss C-46 made an emergency landing in a Honduran rural airstrip, some 50 miles from the Nicaraguan border. The aircraft was carrying an undisclosed number of persons, weapons and ammunition, intended to topple the Somoza regime in Nicaragua. The aircraft was seized and sometime later was handed over to the Honduran Air Force (FAH). In 1962, the C-46 was destroyed by fire after an emergency landing.
2. In 1965, a Nicaraguan C-46 (believed to belong to the Nicaraguan Air Force, FAN), ditched off the Pacific coast of Honduras (Golfo de Fonseca). The crew (two pilots only) were rescued by a FAH H-19 helicopter, several hours later, after an intense search by a FAH C-47.
After checking the construction numbers (manufacturers serial number)and individual history of all Curtiss C-46 airframes listed in the book "Piston Engine Airliner Production List" by A.B. Eastwood and J. Roach , I have been unable to identify either aircraft. Curiously, there are no C-46 aircraft registered as FAN property.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Amado
