You got it kinda right. What Randy is against is unskilled "help" bulling the props through, against/past a hydraulic lock, rather than feeling it and stopping.
Personally, I don't trust that a starter clutch will disengage, and where possible I like to hand turn the prop through. Might get kinda tuff on a C-46 though! :)
